CONGRATULATIONS 2008 GRANT RECIPIENTS!

The 301 Central Education Foundation is dependent on contributions from members of our community to support our grant program. The more contributions we receive, the more grants we will be able to Give to Grow our students. For the 2008-2009 school year, the Foundation  supported five projects at five 301 District schools. This year, with your help, our Give to Grow  goal  is to award even more grants to educators in all seven district schools.

WILL IT BE THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?
Kathy Kolvitz, Cheryl Lorden and Gracie Sewell, all second grade teachers at Howard B. Thomas Grade School, requested funding to update their science curriculum equipment with the purchase of an incubator to assist their students in their observation of chick eggs maturing and hatching. The project ties directly into the second grade science curriculum.

A POSITIVE WAY TO END THE DAY!
Central Middle School sixth grade social studies teacher, Anne Lorenz, requested funding for an out-of-school hours program, Teachers Encouraging Kids (TEK) addressing students’ affective school experience. After- school meetings, attending a Cougars game with classmates and designing class tee-shirts are among the social networking opportunities this program will provide.

TECHNOLOGY + BOOKS = GREAT!
Country Trails Grade School librarian, Shannon Koen, partnered with fifth grade teacher JoAnne Miller to propose the purchase of software and workbooks for Scholastic Reading Counts (SRC) and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). Students will read selected books, take the related computer-based quizzes and develop a data profile which teachers, students and parents can then use to improve reading.

JUST THE RIGHT TOUCH!
Resources to supplement upper grade Every Day Math lessons were requested by Prairie View Grade School special education teachers Patty Miner and Jennifer Zeien. “Touch Math” materials will be utilized for special needs as well as regular education students to improve math skills. Such resources will also be useful in helping to meet student goals at varying Response to Intervention (RTI) tiers.

A NEW CLUB—READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Kristine Bushman and Stacy Nemec, English teachers at Central High School, requested funding to start an after-school- hours book club similar to the “Great Books” clubs with which many are familiar. The club would meet quarterly to discuss pre-selected books in this extra- curricular program. The funding will provide for the initial purchase of reading materials.
